Attorney Sarah Okuh worked with a client who had lived in the United States since the 1970s after entering as a refugee. He was unsure of his current immigration status, and due to the young age at which he came to the United States – as well as the passage of many years – the client had lost all of his major identity and immigration records. Attorney Okuh worked on a FOIA request and was able to ascertain that he has a claim to derivative U.S. citizenship. By helping him obtain a copy of his immigration records and understand the legal basis for his status, the client will now be able to enjoy the benefits of U.S. citizenship.
